Experiencing life and teaching what I know.

Cholera – A devastating disease.

What is cholera?

Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but sometimes it can be severe. Approximately one in 20 infected persons has severe disease characterized by profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting, and leg cramps. In these persons, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours.

Mxit – Improving

Safety for our young on the net is coming along slowly. Mxit, has such a huge impact on teenagers, are scoring points with this press release. However I wonder if there is someone who knows exactly how to go about blocking these chat rooms? I have registered to the site forum(http://www.mxit.co.za/web/index.htm) on 18 December 2008, and asked my questions on how to use the blocking feature. Alas I’m still awaiting a reply!

People always ask, where I get my quotes from. I’m posting a few quotes that I really liked with the links to the different sites. Some of these quotes work wonderful with facebook, as it can be copied and pasted. I also think for those dull classroom walls this might give some inspiration.

If one speaks or acts with a cruel mind, misery follows, as the cart follows the horse… If one speaks or acts with a pure mind, happiness follows, as a shadow follows its source. The Dhammapada

Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.  ~Thomas à Kempis, Imitation of Christ, c.1420

You’ve got a lot of choices.  If getting out of bed in the morning is a chore and you’re not smiling on a regular basis, try another choice.  ~Steven D. Woodhul

Every big problem was at one time a wee disturbance. ~ Unknown Author

If the world were so organized that everything has to be fair, no living creature could survive for a day. The birds would be forbidden to eat worms, and everyone’s self-interest would have to be served. ~ Unknown Author.

Never miss an opportunity to make others happy, even if you have to leave them alone in order to do it.  ~Author Unknown

From the following sites:

sad-teenager As I look at you with brand new eyes, I see you’re hurt

Your attitude hides the pain, I see in your eyes

The movement of your lips as you hold back the tears

I see you fight for yourself and I’m ashamed

You fifteen and should enjoy life

Not take the responsibilities of a grown-up

You had to choose…

How does one choose a parent?

How do you love one more than the other?

The pain in your eyes tells me…

You knew I would understand

You knew you could tell me

You had to choose

How does one choose a parent?

I love you both

All I ask

Both of you, love me?

I had to choose.

As soon as you’re born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool
Till you’re so ——- crazy you can’t follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they’ve tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can’t really function you’re so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you’re so clever and classless and free
But you’re still ——- peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There’s room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

These words from a very controversial man: John Lennon

When I read these words for the first time I was shocked how true it is for most of us. Pondering on the whole idea of who I am and what my purpose is in this life I came to this conclusion…

When a child or a woman is sexually, mentally or physically abused everyone is up in arms and legislation is passed to stop such horrendous acts. And that’s how it should be. No one – no matter how good or bad deserves any form of abuse. My question then, is why is it that I find so many women in an abusive relationship beating themslves up about what went wrong? Every day we look in the mirror and say “I did not deserve the abuse I’m getting” Why then do you beat yourself up about what went wrong? One will not take a baseball bat and hit oneself for doing something wrong. Yet everyday a mental bat is used to beat up the soul.

If I tried harder, if I hold out longer maybe if….

Forget it! When in a situation where everything falls apart it’s impossible for you to be the only person guilty. Don’t get me wrong we are responsible for our actions. However, many factors and other people contributed to a situation to reach a certain point. Did we learn from our mistakes? If we did, forgive yourself; move on, why live another 20years with problems and mistakes that belongs in the past.

Nowhere else did I find it so eloquently put as in these verses: Isaiah 43:1$ 4

1. But now, this is what the LORD says—
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

4. Since you are precious and honoured in my sight,
and because I love you,
I will give men in exchange for you,
and people in exchange for your life.

That is how highly God regards you! Then do not allow anyone, even yourself, to say any different. Put away the baseball bat and use it for its purpose – playing baseball. You deserve to be credited, complimented and loved. In fact it’s mighty arrogant to go against what was decided about you before the foundation of the world.

Be the wonderful creature you were created to be. Surround yourself with people that love and appreciate you.

That is my purpose – to be the best I can be!

The Ultimate Rejection Letter

Herbert A. Millington

Chair – Search Committee

412A Clarkson Hall, Whitson University

College Hill, MA 34109 Dear Professor Millington,

Thank you for your letter of March 16. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me an assistant professor position in your department.

This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite Whitson’s outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume the position of assistant professor in your department this August. I look forward to seeing you then.

Best of luck in rejecting future applicants.

Sincerely, Chris L. Jensen

The above joke seems a little off.

This is the kind of determination we need in education. There is so much in South African education that can break the spirit of educators today. The question is, is it just another job to you? Is this a way for you to make money and have four vacations a year? If you answered yes I suggest you get out, while the going is still good.

Education was never and will never be about the money. Most teachers are in it for the job satisfaction and the difference they can make in their students lives.

It’s twenty odd years ago since I was in school. To this day I remember my History teacher. The values he taught. Time and again he tried to get the most out of each learner by being provocative in his statements and views.

We sure did not sit in his class like puppets being spoon fed. No he taught us the value of each person. How important it is to be the best grown up you can be and then bring forth an even better generation.

This one, is for you Mr. Booysen.

I say thank you!

Psalm 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,

6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.

8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—
even the LORD, who is my refuge-

10 then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

Psalm 91 always was and still is an inspiration to me.
